Free Event in London Will Provide Much Needed Education about Clinical Research

By: Ellyn Getz

On March 7, 2016, the Center for Information & Study on Clinical Research Participation (CISCRP) will host its flagship health education program at the Camden Centre in London, making it the first event to be held internationally. The AWARE for All – London program invites the general public into an open forum about clinical research participation, exploring how and why people get involved, some of the general risks and benefits of participation, and panel discussions with both patients and clinical research professionals about the process.

This kind of program will deeply enrich the knowledge and understanding of clinical research within the London community, which recent study data shows is very low. Despite the richness and the size of the health research activity in London, a recent CISCRP study entitled “Public and Patient: Perceptions & Insights” found that the European public shows the lowest self-assessed general knowledge about the clinical research process and the lowest level of willingness to participate in clinical trials. Moreover, the European community considers clinical research to be riskier than does the public in many other global regions. In fact, a lower proportion of the public in Europe is willing to participate in clinical research today (58%) than did so in 2007 (71%) and European study volunteers are among the least likely to participate in another study in the future.

A closer look at the attitudes and perceptions strongly indicate that much more focus and attention is urgently required to address underlying concerns and implement target outreach, education, and new patient initiatives. Since 2003, AWARE for All Clinical Research Education Day has been offered over 40 times in cities across the US, and we are enthusiastic to expand our outreach to the UK. CISCRP has teamed with research and community partners to provide quality speakers and information on clinical research, and nearly 100% of the 6200+ attendees have rated the program as excellent and highly informative. The London program will feature free health checks, an Information Alley/Exhibit Area, meaningful presentations from prominent UK-based medical professionals and community patients, as well as free food and giveaways.

We invite local UK professionals and patients to join us and contribute to the success of this highly anticipated event. Register now! You don’t want to miss out on this invaluable opportunity for public education about clinical research.
